Unemployment rate decreased to 7.2 percent in July-September: NSO survey

New Delhi, November 24 (Language) The unemployment rate for persons aged 15 years and above in urban areas came down to 7.2 percent on an annual basis in July-September, 2022.

This information has been received from the data released on Thursday by the National Statistics Office (NSO). The unemployment rate was 9.8 percent in the same period a year ago.

Unemployment rate is defined as the percentage of unemployed persons among the labor force. The country had a higher unemployment rate in July-September, 2021 due to the impact of restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thus, the latest data based on the labor force survey highlighting the decline in the unemployment rate indicates that the economy is moving towards a steady revival after coming out of the impact of the pandemic.

According to the 16th Periodic Labor Force Survey (PLFS), the unemployment rate for people aged 15 years and above stood at 7.6 per cent in April-June 2022 in urban areas.

The survey found that the unemployment rate among women (aged 15 years and above) in urban areas declined to 9.4 per cent in July-September, 2022. It was 11.6 percent in the same period a year ago. This figure was 9.5 per cent during April-June, 2022.

At the same time, the unemployment rate of men in urban areas decreased to 6.6 percent in July-September 2022 as compared to 9.3 percent a year ago. It was 7.1 percent in April-June, 2022.
