India Russia Relations: Modi’s signal to Putin, Biden in action, America will end India’s dependence on Russian weapons!
Washington: India’s buying arms and oil from Russia may soon stop. Actually, the Modi government has started talks with America again on this issue. The US State Department has said that they are in deep talks with India. The ministry said that if a consensus is reached on this issue, Russia could be isolated internationally. After the start of the Ukraine war, the price of oil and gas has seen a lot on the global level. Meanwhile, Russia offered India cheap oil, which was accepted by the Modi government. But, America had expressed displeasure over this decision of India. The US had said that buying India’s oil would weaken the sanctions imposed on Russia. In such a situation, if there is a distance between India and Russia, then China can directly benefit from it.
America said – Russia is not a reliable arms supplier
A US State Department official said in New York that Russia is no longer a reliable arms supplier. We are explaining to India that they can really benefit from finding new markets. The official said that India is heavily dependent on Russia and it has increased this dependence on its own in almost 40 years. Earlier it was dependent on Russia for military and now it is on energy. So we’re having an intense conversation with India about the fact that diversifying can be of great benefit. We want to help them find alternatives. However, the Indian Foreign Ministry has not given any reaction to this statement of America.
Putin has recently ordered the deployment of reserve troops
America’s response came hours before Vladimir Putin’s deployment of 300,000 reserve troops. Announcing the mobilization of his army, Putin said that if the Russian people are threatened, we will respond with full force. Putin said that we consider it necessary to support the proposal of the Ministry of Defense and the General Staff to ensure the security of our people in the liberated areas, to protect our homeland, its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Putin had said that the mobilization of the Russian army would start from Wednesday. He said that mobilization means the deployment of reserve soldiers on the front fronts. Putin has framed the Ukraine war as part of a larger struggle for Russian survival against the West. They have claimed that the goal of Western countries is to divide and destroy Russia.
India had maintained balance between America and Russia
From the very beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, India has tried to strike a balance between Moscow and its Western critics. India has refrained from voting or criticizing Russia in every international forum, not just the United Nations. Relations between Russia and India date back to the era of the Cold War. Russia is also India’s largest arms supplier country. From the very beginning, India has resisted Western pressure to break ties with Russia. Instead, India has made a record increase in its purchases of Russian oil, coal and fertilisers.
Modi’s statement on war in front of Putin became the turning point
However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told Russian President Vladimir Putin last week that now is not the time for war. His statement raised apprehensions that India’s stand is changing regarding Russia. Modi made the remarks during a one-on-one meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Uzbekistan. He told Putin that I know that today is not an era of war and we have talked to you on the phone many times on the subject that democracy and diplomacy and dialogue are all these things that touch the world.
India’s growing relations with America
The relations between India and Russia are decades old. Relations with Western countries have strengthened significantly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to power in India in 2014. Compared to Russia, India’s trade is many times less than that of America. Trade with the US stands at over $10 billion compared to about $8 billion for India’s trade with Russia. In recent years, India has also become a major customer of US military equipment. India is also a member of the Quad along with the US, Japan and Australia. Modi’s frank criticism of the Russia-Ukraine war is a big blow to Putin. Putin’s army has suffered several major defeats in the Ukraine war in recent weeks. Ukraine claims to have re-occupied an area of about 8,000 square kilometers (3,000 sq mi).
