Goyal asked G20 to discuss the extension of patent exemption for the investigation, treatment of Kovid soon

New Delhi, Sep 22 (PTI) Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday urged the G20 countries to initiate a timely discussion at the WTO on extension of patent exemptions for testing and treatment of COVID-19.

Members of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in June agreed to grant a temporary patent exemption for manufacturing of the Kovid-19 vaccine for only five years.

However, the inclusion of investigation and treatment within the scope of this exemption is to be discussed. India and South Africa had requested to include them in the ambit of exemption.

Goyal raised the issue in his opening remarks at the ongoing G20 Trade, Investment and Industry Ministerial Meeting in Bali, Indonesia.

According to an official statement, he asked the G20 countries to commit to this issue.
